EQAO achievement scores

Ottawa Catholic School Board students continue to surpass provincial scores on the annual Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) standardized tests. The standardized tests were conducted in the school year 2015-2016 in Grades 3, 6, 9, & 10 and assess reading, writing & mathematics. Our Board results have been consistently higher than the province in all of the assessments for the last five years that provincial results have been available. Our educators continue to work diligently to ensure literacy and numeracy are system-wide priorities.

Focusing on improvement

Board and school improvement plans are developed with special attention to literacy and mathematics. We are taking a multi-faceted approach to improving scores in numeracy. We have a strong focus on pedagogy (how we teach and learn), on curriculum, and on how students can apply what they have learned. As we implement the province’s renewed math strategy and build on our literacy gains, we continue professional development for our dedicated educators. New this year will be up to three trained Math mentors in each elementary school.

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) is an independent provincial agency funded by the Government of Ontario. Their mandate is to conduct province-wide tests at key points in every student’s primary, junior and secondary education and report the results to educators, parents and the public. EQAO acts as a catalyst for increasing the success of Ontario students by measuring their achievement in reading, writing and mathematics in relation to Ontario Curriculum expectations. The resulting data provide a gauge of quality and accountability in Ontario’s publicly funded education system. EQAO distributes an individual report to each student who writes the tests and posts school, school board and provincial results on its website.
